About the Journal
The Dermatology Online Journal (DOJ) was created in an effort to explore the educational potential of distributed hypermedia served via the World Wide Web. The journal is attempting to serve the dual role of providing relevant information and improving the way scholarly content is shared.
As the first open access online medical journal, the DOJ published its first issue in 1995. What began as a small publication of a few articles 1-4 times per year has now expanded into a bi-monthly journal that publishes 20 articles or more per issue. It has been peer-reviewed since inception and has been PubMed accessed for more than 15 years. The journal utilizes Open Journal Systems as its publication platform. The DOJ is hosted by Dermsquared and is viewable on doj.dermsquared.com.
The DOJ has generated significant interest domestically and internationally. Since May of 2013, when the California Digital Library began hosting our journal, we have received about 1000 submissions per year. We have an overall acceptance rate of 24%. Currently we have more than 700 reviewers in our reviewing database. These physicians are mainly academics and are from the US and all over the world. Each month, we generate hundreds of thousands of requests (hits) and thousands of download requests. Our top referrers in order of frequency are: pathologyonlines.com, Google, eScholarship, Facebook, and nih.gov.
